Build Your First Robot - First Robot

I had promised earlier that this post will concentrate on transistor circuits but as I have not written a blog post for long (which is my fault), in order to compensate for that, this post will be on actually building the robot. For these many days we have been discussing various basics necessary for building a robot. Today we are actually going to put them into action. Let's dive in!

Our first robot is going to be fairly simple. This robot is kind of an experiment done to see what is necessary to build a robot.

1. Breadboard
2. TIP 122 n-p-n transistor
3. 2 motors ( with a good torque)
4. 2 LDRs (Light Dependent Resistors)
5. Wires
6. 9 volt power supply

Step 1: Add the transistors
Attach the transistors to the breadboard as shown in the image. Go online and find the manufacturer's datasheet of the transistor. Generally the pin out diagram is as follows, but do check the datasheet.

Step 2: Add the LDRs
LDR is a special kind of resistor whose resistance depends upon the intensity of light falling on it. This is going to be the sensor that our robot will use to detect light and follow it.

Step 3: Do the connections
Attach one pin of the LDR to the base of the transistor. Connect the other pin to the positive rail of the breadboard. Connect the collector of the transistor to the positive rail and one pin of the motor to the emitter and the other to the negative rail of the breadboard.  Do this with the other transistor and LDR as well.

Step 4: Mount the motors
Make sure the motors are wired in the direction of motion. The motor attached to the right LDR must be mounted on  the left side and vice-versa.

Step 5: Power up
The robot will work with 9 volts. The major contributing factor towards power consumption is the motor. Check the power requirements of the motors and to the necessary adjustments in the power supply if required.

We have built our first robot! As I have mentioned earlier this is not an advanced robot. This is just an experiment with simple components. In the future posts we may try to modify this robot to make it much better. If you have any doubts regarding the build, feel free to comment.
